SRINAGAR: Department of Youth Services and Sports today organised a prize distribution function at Indoor Sports Stadium Srinagar to distribute prizes among the students representing different schools of Srinagar district who participated in different games including badminton and martial arts.
The Director General Youth Services and Sports, Jehangir Mir was the Chief Guest on the occasion while Joint Director Education, Dr. Abid Rashid Shah was the Guest of Honour.
On the occasion Demo match were held in badminton and martial arts including Judo, Wusho Taekwondo and squeaky.
Speaking on the occasion, Jehangir said that all out efforts are being made to streamline the department so as to ensure complete revival of the sports and the athletic activities in the state as desired by Minister for Youth Services and Sports.
He said that MoU have been signed with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) under which two training centers one each at Srinagar and Jammu would be established to give boost to the sports activities in the state. He said all supportive material and services of coaches would be provided by the SAI.
Jehangir said there is no dearth of talent in the students in the state however he said the need of the hour is to harness the talent in a right direction. He said sports it the best way of means to channelize the talent of the students, adding efforts are on to channelize this talent at gross root level.
He said the positive and shining picture of the championship came to fore by way of a large participation of government schools including girls.
Later, prizes were distributed by the Director General among 408 students including girls for their best performance in badminton and different categories of martial art.
District Youth Service and Sports Officer, S. Balbir Singh Bali gave the inaugural address while vote of thanks was presented by Incharge Publicity, Azhar Hajni of YSS on the occasion.
