DC appeals people to maintain peace, harmony;Applauds role of media for coverage

JAMMU: The Deputy Commissioner Simrandeep Singh on Friday convened a meeting with the representatives of various religious organisations and civil society members to review the situation after recent incidents in the Jammu city.
The DC urged people to maintain brotherhood, peace and communal amity for which Jammu has always taken lead in all testing times. He asked them to defeat the designs of vested elements and do not pay any heed to rumour mongers.
The participants suggested for constitution of committee comprising representatives from all religions who would assist the administration during religious processions/functions. They also demanded deployment of adequate security at all religious places. They asked the security agencies to take strict action against the persons found disrespecting any place of worship.
Responding to the issues, the DC said that strict action under law will be taken against the miscreants adding that the only aim of such elements is to disturb the peace and harmony in the society.
Deputy Commissioner also appealed to the representatives of the civil society to maintain peace and discourage mob culture which is a threat to life and property of the people.
DIG Jammu Ashkoor Ahmad Wani, SSP, ADC besides senior officers from civil administration and police attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner along with DIG and SSP, Jammu interacted with media persons in a meeting. The meeting was attended by large number of media persons belonging to Print and Electronic, including the President of Press Club, Ashwani Kumar. Incidents of Roop Nagar and Nanak Nagar figured prominently in the meeting, the media persons shared their suggestions with the administration regarding the recent incidents which had the potential of flaring up the communal sentiments in the district. The administration welcomed the suggestions floated by the media persons and appreciated the role of media in responsibly reporting on such sensitive matters in the last three days.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner, Jammu also convened a meeting with all the Sub-Divisional Magistrates, Tehsildars and BDOs of Jammu district today in connection with the recent disrespectful incidents at two prominent temples.
The SDMs and Tehsildars were directed to conduct a survey of all prominent religious places in their jurisdictions so that a strategy can be formulated for security arrangements at the places. They were further asked to hold meetings with the committees of such religious institutions in order to put in place local mechanism of providing security to these institutions, wherever feasible and in order to seek the assistance of committees in securing communal harmony.
The BDOs were asked to constitute Peace committees in all the rural areas with the involvement of Panchayati Raj institutions and ensure that the communal harmony is maintained in the district.
