Though the Friday rain and high velocity winds have brought the much needed respite from the sultry weather the region has been facing for the last one week the downside of the Monsoon is some new dangers lurking very near to you. Friday’s weather has brought to the fore this threat as well as damage to the property for everyone. What envisaged as the remedy for interrupted power supply but is going to create some hardships to the people. Under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms (R- APDRP) the State Government had embarked on an ambitious project to improve the power supply to households and commercial units especially during the peak summer period. For that new power lines were laid to make pilferage a difficult proposition and to keep the voltage constant small transformers were installed in the narrow lanes of the city. Some of them are just at the main gate or over it keeping people always on tenterhook when the weather goes unruly. The planners and the executing agencies have done such a shoddy work that whenever there are high winds or bad weather one will find the poles supporting these transformers swinging in all directions. The project is yet to be completed but the equipment installed are getting burned or the poles falling on the houses. Will the government owe the responsibility for the damages and any casualties attached with such accidents? Only time will tell what type of any new catastrophe people will be facing. The high velocity winds have exposed the quality of the work at some places like Nanak Nagar area of Jammu city where a pole supporting a transformer got uprooted and fell on the house causing damage. Before this incident such a transformer got flamed out in Gandhi Nagar area. It is not even five months most of these poles installed in many areas are standing at a dangerous angle waiting for some tragedy to take place. Monsoon has not yet settled but the vagaries of weather have already started haunting people in the form of such accidents at the door steps.
