Congress leaders condemn Pakistan shelling, pay tributes to martyrs

JAMMU: Senior Congress leaders on Monday strongly condemned Pakistan for heavy shelling in R S Pura sector and several other border areas of the State and paid rich tributes to martyred Jawans in the firing.
Senior Congress leaders Sham Lal Sharma, former Minister and Senior Vice- President, Jahangir Mir, Dy. Chairman Legislative Council, General Secretary PCC and former Minister Manjit Singh, former MLA Prof. Gharu Ram, Shoba Singh Secretary PCC, Gurdarshan Singh State Vice-Chairman PCC Minority Deptt and Gajan Singh-Chairman Minority Deptt. PCC Jammu province, attended the last rites of the martyred Jawan Gurnam Singh and paid floral tributes to the brave jawan and expressed sympathies with the bereaved family members.
Sham Lal and other senior leaders also expressed grave concern over the failure of the State and Central Government to provide specialised treatment to the martyr, who should have been immediately airlifted.
The Congress leaders strongly condemned fresh heavy shelling by the Pakistan since yesterday in various parts of R S Pura and Akhnoor sector resulting into another BSF jawan Sushil Kumar attaining martyrdom and injuries to one Jawan and some civilians. Expressing serious concern over the escalation in tension on the borders and LoC, Congress leaders asked the authorities to ensure safety of border residents and make all contingency arrangements to deal with the situation. They reiterated the demands for allotment of plots in safer zones to border residents besides bunkers for them at appropriate places in borders areas.
