As per WHO, globally number one and number two causes of death are MI and stroke. In India also the number one cause of death is MI & same is the case with J&K too.
It was emphasized that early management/ intervention in Ischemic events can make a lot of difference in the outcome of such patients.
The general public also needs to be made aware of the symptoms and signs of these Acute Ischemic events, so that they seek medical attention early and receive treatment in time.
It has been observed that during winter, there is an increase in the number of cases of acute MI and stroke.
Prevention of risk factors and awareness among the general public is mandatory considering the burden of cases.
The preventive measures include : healthy diet and exercise, weight control, avoid smoking and alcohol, control of blood sugars, control of blood pressure and control of lipids.
Besides, unnecessary exposure to cold should be avoided especially during early hours of mornings and evenings .
The general public should be made aware of the warning signs and symptoms. The alarming symptoms in case of heart attack are chest pain, sweating, shortness of breath and giddiness while in case of stroke are sudden onset weakness of one side of body, slurring of speech, deviation of face and loss of consciousness.
Seeking timely advice and help will improve the outcome of our patients and enable them to live a better life.
