‘Rs 6500 only per acre is like putting salt on farmers’ wounds’

CHANDIGARH: Attacking Punjab government, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Saturday said that the state government has not done anything concrete work for relief in the flood-affected areas.
On the contrary, the vehicles of private helpers are being stopped, he added.
Tarun Chugh said that the Bhagwant Maan government is not desisting from promoting itself even in times of crisis by putting government stickers on the vehicles of relief materials. Punjab Government’s decision to give only Rs.6500 per acre compensation to the flood affected farmers is like rubbing salt on the wounds of the farmers, he said.
He described the decision of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann as anti-farmer as for those farmers whose crops worth lakhs were destroyed and houses damaged, this relief is like cumin in the mouth of a camel. Crops over about 60,000 acres have been heavily damaged due to floods. According to agricultural experts, crops cannot be sown in flooded fields for several months, he added. Chugh said that in such circumstances the visit of Chief Minister Mann to the flood affected areas was just a publicity stunt and for photo shoots. In the flood affected areas, people do not have drinking water, clothes, food items and the government is searching for its own photo sessions in the disaster. Punjab government is not able to help the people but also stopping those who help, he maintained.
Chugh said whether this disaster is man-made or not? The Bhagwant Mann government has strongly promoted the mining mafia, due to this excessive and unsafe and unnecessary mining changed the flow of rivers and created flood situation in the area. People of Punjab are suffering due to floods and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is engrossed in political tourism, he observed.
Chugh said the losses cannot be compensated but the government should at least provide Rs 5 lakh per family for house loss and Rs 50,000 to the farmers. Along with this, he has appealed to all the religious, social and social organizations of Punjab to come forward and serve humanity in this time of crisis. This has been the tradition of Punjab and Punjabis, he added.
