Climate change increasing poverty, vulnerability: VC SKUAST-J

JAMMU: Jammu Chapter of Indian Society of Soil Science organised a lecture on theme ‘Meeting challenges of nutrient management in the pretext of climate change’ here on Wednesday.
The lecture was delivered by renowned soil scientist and VC SKUAST-J, Prof. Pradeep K. Sharma. Prof Sharma, while dwelling upon the theme, proposed that climate change has already deteriorated the natural resources in Himalayas and Peer Panchal. He emphasised that it is a challenge for the scientists to calibrate the nutrient management of different crops especially when the crop cycle is changing due to climate change. He stressed that nutrient management should be based on Leaf Color Chart, Target Yield Concept or on site-specific nutrient management. He concluded his lead lecture by emphasizing that climate change is a reality and the stake holders have to come up with different scientific ideas which will reduce the impact of climate change viz. a viz. production is concerned.
The lecture was attended by Dr. D.P Abrol, Dean FoA-Chatha, Dr T.A.S Ganai, Director Education, Dr. K.R Sharma, President, Jammu Chapter of ISSS, Dr. B.C Sharma, Head Agronomy, Dr Vikas Sharma, Vice-President Jammu Chapter of ISSS, Dr. P.K Rai and Treasurer, Jammu Chapter, Dr. M.P Sharma.
At the onset, Dr. Vivak M. Arya, Secretary, Jammu Chapter of ISSS informed about the objectives, mandates and functioning of the society.
He stressed that the main objective of the society is to aware various stakeholders about the importance of soil science and how to conserve natural resources. The proceeding of the programme was conducted by Sweeta Manhas.
