China’s Defence of Azhar calls for reforms in UNSC

Dear Editor,
This is not for the first time that China has blocked India’s bid to ban Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar. Earlier too, similar efforts by India, for UN sanctions after the Mumbai terror attack and against Pakistan for its release of Mumbai terror attack mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, were blocked by China last year. China’s opposition to the sanctions against the JeM chief is incomprehensible.
By shielding Pakistan-based terrorists responsible for attacks in India, China is shamelessly betraying not only India’s interest, but also the efforts of the world community to combat terror and to isolate countries that support terrorists. That 14 members out of the 15-member committee agreed for discussion but China vetoed the move, calls for reforms in the UN Security Council. This should include scrapping of the provision of veto power that the five permanent members presently have.
