Centre to help in Jammu Lake project: Dy CM

Jammu: Asserting that artificial lake on river Tawi is a dream project of Jammu people, Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said tonight that Centre has assured its help in ironing out the technical problems to complete the project.

However, earlier in the day, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had hinted at shelving of the previous NC-Congress government’s artificial lake project in Jammu, saying it is not “feasible”.

“Central government has assured us to help the state government in providing technical expertise to complete the Jammu Lake project,” Singh said tonight.

Singh, who rushed to New Delhi and raised the issue with Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharati, said “Artificial Lake on river Tawi is a dream project of the people of Jammu. It cannot be wound up”.

“Uma Bharati has assured me that a technical committee would be sent to reassess the project and iron out the technical difficulties so that it is completed,” Dy CM said.

He said that huge money has been spent on the project and it cannot be allowed to go in waste.

Keeping with popular demand, the previous government had conceived the Rs 75 crore project on river Tawi. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had laid the foundation stone for the project on December 6, 2009.
