CEC LAHDC Leh urges scientists to transform barren land into farms

LEH: Two-day national workshop on ‘Protected Structures for High Himalayas: Design and Application’ organised Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) in collaboration with National Committee on Plasticulture Applications in Horticulture (NCPAH) Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India commenced here at SKUAST, Staka on Friday.
The Chief Executive Councillor LAHDC Leh Dr. Sonam Dawa Lonpo who was Chief Guest at the inaugural session said that process of tree plantation has been expedited due to the initiative of research centres and efforts of the farmers. Talking about the difference in quality of green house polythene sheets by the agencies including government as well as NGOs, Dr Dawa urged upon the stakeholders to finalise on a single quality sheet that suits best for Ladakh.
“In coming years, the Council has plans to cultivate the barren lands focusing specially on apricots in Sham area, sea buck thorn in Nubra region, and promotion of Pashmina in Changthang region”, he said and urged scientists in achieving this long distance dream.
Executive Councillor for Agriculture Tsering Wangdus urged upon the farmers to stress on the optimum usage of green houses.
Chief Guest also released a compendium of a series of books written by scholars and scientists of SKUAST on different subjects. He also distributed certificates and knitting machines among women of Umla village and butter churning machines among women of Gya-Miru.
Earlier Director Research SKUAST-K Dr. M.Y. Zargar gave details of achievements of SKUAST-K.
Vote of thanks was presented by Associate Director Research, HMAARI Dr. T.H. Masoodi.
Padmashri Tsewang Norphel ‘Glacier Man of Ladakh’, Padmashri Dr. Brahma Singh Advisor, World Noni Research Foundation Chennai and Councillor Gya-Miru Tsering Paldan were also present.
