JAMMU: Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCI) Jammu honoured Padamshri Dr Kiran Seth, founder SPIC MACAY during a function held at Chamber House here today. The traditional ritual of honouring Dr Kiran Seth was conducted by the CCI President, Arun Gupta. It is pertinent to mention here that SPIC MACAY is a Society for the promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture among the Youth which was founded by Dr. Kiran Seth in the year 1977.
In his address on the occasion the Chamber President, Arun Gupta while asserting that it was a privilege and honour for the Chamber to host the great personality in the City of Temples, highlighted the achievements of Dr Kiran Seth in detail. He said Dr Kiran Seth (born 1949) is an Indian academician, ex-Professor and ex-Professor Emeritus at the department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, since 1976, and is widely known as the founder of SPIC MACAY (1977), a non-profit organization which promotes Indian classical music, Indian classical dance, and other aspects of Indian culture, amongst youth across the world.
CCI President informed that Dr Kiran Seth started his career working as a Member of the Technical Staff (MTS) at Bell Laboratories, New Jersey in 1974, a job he gave up to return to India in 1976, to teach and carry out research at IIT Delhi, where he served till his retirement in 2021. It was at IIT Delhi that he founded SPIC MACAY in 1977, a society that has done phenomenal amount of work in the area of promoting Indian heritage amongst school and college students in India and different parts of the world, he added. SPIC MACAY is the biggest, non-profit, voluntary, cultural, youth movement in independent India.
It is pertinent to mention here that the stature of Dr Kiran Seth can be well judged from the fact that he has received Padma Shri from the Govt, Distinguished Alumnus Award by the IIT Kharagpur, NDTV Indian of the Year under Arts and Culture category, Sahitya Kala Parishad Award, Sanskriti Award, Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan Award, Keshav Kothari Smriti Award, Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award, Chand Khan Award and Modernites Excellence award by Modern School Delhi besides a long list of other awards.
Dr Kiran Seth in his brief speech on the occasion impressed upon the youth to work relentlessly and with full devotion for the nation by fully using their potential. He also thanked the CCI members for hosting a function to felicitate and honour him.
