JAMMU: A cardiac diseases evaluation camp was organised to mark ‘World No Tobacco Day’ here at Health Centre University of Jammu. Around 170 patients attended the camp.
Vice Chancellor Jammu University Prof. R.D Sharma inaugurated the camp. Dr. Sushil K. Sharma Head Department of Cardiology Government Medical College Jammu along with a team of doctors comprising Dr. Arvind Kohli (Cardiac Surgeon), Dr Richu, Dr. Mohi Kalsotra, Dr. D Kapoor, Dr. Atul Vij, Dr. Eshan Chopra, Dr. Najmus Saqib, Dr. Shabana (CMO), Dr. Goutam (Dentist), Dr. Nosheen (Physiotherapist) and supporting staff including Gurmeet Singh, Waryam Singh, Sanjay Khajuria and volunteers Gourav, Mohan, Lokesh, Vikas, Balwan, Akshay, Gagandeep, Mohsin Raina, Rinku, Nitan and Faiz Mirza supervised the camp.
Dr Sushil Sharma elaborated the menace of smoking and its ill effects on all the vital organs of the body.
“Smoking and tobacco chewing is single risk factor at present for all killer diseases whether cardiac events, stroke, lung cancer, mouth cancer, malignancies of wind pipe, food pipe and stomach and all sorts of vascular disorders”, he said and added, “The use of tobacco is fatal and it should be eradicated from society”.
He exhorted that 70 per cent of people who smoke are aware of ill effects of it and almost 50 per cent of them wish to quit but their nicotine dependence is already so high that they are not able to do it.
Dr Sushil highlighted the role of early diagnosis and treatment of Cardiac ailments particularly the growing incidence of coronary artery diseases in younger populace. In this camp, the patients were given benefits of diagnostic tests like ECG, biochemistry including blood sugar, lipid and thyroid profile.
Free medicines were also distributed and campaign to get aware of all the health issues caused by tobacco use also launched.
Prof. R.D Sharma directed medical officer to arrange a lecture by Dr. Sushil Sharma for the stakeholders of the university.
Dr. Shabana Azmi, Medical Officer and Dr. Gautam Sharma, Dental Surgeon informed that such health camps will be conducted in future also. Among those present during inauguration included Jai Kumar Sharma, Special Secretary to Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Pankaj Shrivastva, Dean Students Welfare.
