BGSBU scholarship scam: 42 more cheques worth Rs 15 lakh detected

JAMMU: After the arrest of an employee of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), the Special Investigations Team (SIT) on Friday detected 42 more cheques amounting to Rs 15 lakhs which have been withdrawn fraudulently.
Meanwhile, Justice Tashi Rabstan of J&K High Court Jammu Wing has rejected the pre-arrest bail application of Muzaffar Iqbal, working as Senior Assistant in the office of Dean of Students Welfare Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University, Rajouri, who was allegedly involved in defrauding the university money .
On the report of Branch Manager, Jammu and Kashmir Bank, Branch Darhal, an FIR 46/15 dated 20th May, 2015 was registered against Muzaffar for commission of offences punishable under Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 409 and 109 RPC at Police Station Darhal regarding twelve such cheques of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University which were fraudulently credited from Darhal Bank Branch.
Observing that sanctioning of scholarships by the Government to the genuine students under the scheme framed by the Social Welfare Department and the Tribal Affairs is to give financial assistance and upliftment of bright children amongst the Tribal students so as to pursue their studies without facing financial hardships, the Judgerejected the bail application.
Rajouri SSP Dr Hasib Mugal, when contacted said, “The Directors Traibal Affairs and Social welfare have been asked to provide the list of students recommended for the scholarships.”
“The Deputy Registrar and Registrar have also been summoned to ascertain the details,” Dr Hasib said.
On Thursday, an employee of BGSBU and a staffer of J&K bank were arrested for their involvement in the swindling the scholarship money meant for disbursement among the bright and meritorious students. More arrests are likely to be made within days, police said.
