Awareness programme for fishermen organised

AKHNOOR: An awareness programme was conducted at Aquarium Fish Farm Doomi, Akhnoor, Distt. Jammu for the bonafied , registered fishermen of district Jammu.
A total of 75 registered fishermen participated in the programme covering different areas of district Jammu like, Marh, Bhalwal, Akhnoor, Khour, Pargwal etc.
During the programme Kulbhushan Verma, Assistant Director Fisheries, Jammu, deliberated on various welfare schemes for fishermen community of district Jammu executed by the Department of Fisheries.
The various welfare schemes like providing of insurance cover up to Rs. 1 lakh , providing of low cost houses under Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) amounting to Rs. 75,000 per unit and providing of nylon twine to registered fishermen ( through Social Welfare Department),were apprised to the registered fishermen. These schemes will help the poor down trodden fishermen community for the uplift of their economic status and living standard.
During the programme, fishermen were also made aware regarding the implementation of Fisheries Act like ban on fishing after sun set and before sunrise, use of nets of optimum size so that small fishes/fry and fingerlings can be saved in order to sustain the regular fish harvest by the fishermen community from natural water bodies, ban on fishing during monsoon period so that the population of fish stocks can be retained/saved which will help in maintenance of ecological balance in nature.
The fishermen during the deliberation pointed out various problems being faced by them in the field which were assured to be taken care on utmost priority. Moreover, the fishermen assured of full cooperation to the Department of Fisheries.
