Awareness camps held on consumer rights

POONCH: To provide services to the traders and to make the general public aware about the functioning of Legal Metrology Department (LMD), five days in-situ-cum-awareness camps were organised at Mandi and Loran.
Under the supervision of Assistant Controller LMD, Kewal Krishan, officials of LMD conducted verification and re-verification of weighing and measuring instruments of about 190 traders from Loran and Mandi areas. Around 650 people attended the camp and got information about the role and functioning of the department and their consumer rights. The officials also encouraged trader community to get their weighing and measuring instruments periodically verified/re-verified from the department to avoid penalty. The documents of verification/licenses were also issued to traders on the spot.
Informing the people about consumer rights, the officials asked them to apply their informed choices to buy commodity from the market and assert their right as vigilant consumer. Assistant Controller highlighted the importance of Legal Metrology in protection of consumer rights.
He asked them to approach the office of Assistant Controller Legal Metrology in case of any compliant and also informed them that the department is authorised, on behalf of consumers, to lodge complaint in appropriate consumer forums under Jammu and Kashmir Consumer Protection Act 1987.
