7-year RI, Rs 2 lakh fine to SPO in acid attack case

JAMMU: Principal Sessions Judge Jammu Sanjay Gupta on Saturday awarded seven years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and fine of Rs 2 lakh to Special Police Officer (SPO) Sanjeev Kumar, son of Ghara Singh of village Gagian, R.S Pura, who was facing trial in acid throwing case.
Principal Sessions Judge Jammu, Sanjay Gupta after hearing Rakesh Badyal Public Prosecutor for the State and Bachan Lal Kalgotra for the victim observed that acid attack is a form of violence against women carried out to deface or kill them. There is a steep rise in number of acid attack cases documented in recent years. Acid attacks are considered particularly vicious among crimes against women as they cause perpetual suffering to the victim. Acid throwing could well be described as the attempt to subjugate women. With these observations Court awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 2 lakh, and ordered that if fine amount be realised, the same shall be given to victim as compensation.
