7 killed in road mishap in Kashmir

Seven persons, including a father- daughter duo, were killed and five others injured in a head-on collision between a passenger cab and a load carrier in Sopore township of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district today, police said.

“A Sumo, on way from Kupwara to Srinagar, collided with a load carrier in Sopore resulting in the death of seven persons,” a police spokesman said.

He said the accident took place near Ringi area of Tarzoo in Sopore township, 50 kms from here, on the Srinagar-Kupwara Highway.

The deceased included a father-daughter duo– Mohammad Shafi Malik and Naza, residents of Trehgam area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Others were identified as Parveiz Ahmad Malik and Abdul Majeed Dar, residents of Dolipora Trehgam, Dilshad Ahmad Peer, resident of Kralpora Trehgam, Sara, resident of Shimnag and Waseem Ahmad Malik , a resident of Trehgam, the spokesman said.

Five persons including two residents of West Bengal – Mohammad Halaf and Mohammad Saleem Akhter – were injured in the mishap, the spokesman said, adding that all the injured have been shifted to different hospitals for treatment.

Police have registered a case in this regard, he said.

Meanwhile, National Conference (NC) working president Omar Abdullah expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic accident.

“I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and pray for the recovery of those who have been injured,” Omar said.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti also expressed shock and grief over the tragic loss of lives.

Mehbooba conveyed her heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured, a PDP spokesman said.
