Sushil holds camp for differently abled children at JRC Home

JAMMU: Taking a step further towards reaching out to the divine’s special creation, Head of the Cardiology Department of Government Medical College and Superspeciality Hospital, Jammu Dr. Sushil Sharma held a day-long camp at JRC Home For Handicapped Udheywala in the outskirts of Jammu city in collaboration with Childline Nodal, Department of Law, University of Jammu.
Accompanied by HoD Law/Director Childline, Prof Arvind Jasrotia and a team of young doctors, paramedics and volunteers, Dr. Sushil reached the Home in the wee hours of the morning and started scanning inmates of the Home for prevalence of cardiac diseases and other health ailments. More than 70 inmates and staff were screened for cardiovascular disease and other ailments. He took special care of those who were unable to move or walk. They were thoroughly checked and free medicines were given as per the requirements.
“Being disabled should not mean being denied from having access to every basic aspects of life”, Dr. Sushil said. He stressed that these children are differently abled and likewise require special care and attention from the civil society.
The children asked Dr. Sushil several interesting questions about heart diseases and showed keen interest in knowing more about how they can grow up as healthy individuals.
Dr. Sushil and his team answered their queries, ensuring that none of their question goes unanswered.
“You are future of the State and the country. You must develop healthy eating habits besides taking care of your routine health issues. Do not live an unhealthy life. Give up eating too much of fatty food. Eat what is good for your heart health. Don’t let your heart become weak,” Dr. Sushil advised the children.
He promised the inmates that he would be available for them round the clock. I am always available for you all. Treat me as your own and knock my door whenever you wish to.
Dr. Sushil also exhorted that the government should address the issues of stigma, discrimination and marginalisation that persons with disabilities are subjected to on account of their social, physical and attitudinal barriers that hinder their effective participation in the nations progress.
President of the Home, P.C Kapoor, Nina Rishi (Warden) and other office bearers applauded the efforts of Cardiology Department and Childline for holding a camp in the home.
Others who were part of this humane effort include Dr. Mohi Kalsotra and Dr. Dhaneshwar Kapoor. Paramedics and volunteers who were part of the team included Kashmiri Lal, Kamal Kishore, Gaurav Sharma, Aman Gupta, Vikas Kumar, Rajeev Vohra, Rohit khajuria (Co-ordinator Childline), Sonam Prasher, Kartika Bakshi and Nitan Sharma (Research Scholars, Law Department).
