KATHUA: The formidable side of Sabhi Cricket Club clinched the sixth edition of the J and K Police Martyrs Twenty20 Cricket Tournament Trophy outplaying Akshay Star Cricket Club in the final played at Sports Stadium, here.
In the final played today, Sabhi Cricket Club Hoshiarpur defeated Akshay Star Kohli Club Kathua by four wickets.
Earlier, Sabhi Cricket Club won the toss and chose to field first.
Batting first, Akshay Star Kohli Cricket Club Kathua was bundled out for 113 runs in 19.5 overs. Rohit Sharma was the top scorer with 33 runs smashing three boundary followed by Puneet Bist and Sultan Ansari, who scored 25 (3×4) and 18 (2×4) runs respectively.
For Sabhi Cricket
Club, Shamsher Yadav, Ronak and Hitest shared two wickets each.
In reply, Sabhi Cricket Club chased the target making 117 runs in 17.5 overs for the loss of six wickets. Deepak Punia 29 (1×4), G Abhimanu 24 (2×4) and Gopal 17 (3×4) runs were the main scorers. Sultan Ansari clinched three wickets while Gourav took two and Rahul got one wicket for Akshay Star Kohli Cricket Club.
On the basis of their performance, Deepak Punia was declared Man of the Match while Man of the Series trophy went to Rahul Tewatia of Akshay Club. Rahul was presented the keys of car as a special prize which was sponsored by Satyam Cement and TMT Saria members Davinder Verma, Lalit Agarwal and Naveen Partap.
The final match was officiated by Kulbushan Singh, Sanjeev Singh Anoop Sharma, Mohan Lal, Rajesh Gupta and Daram Vir Singh. In the final and valedictory function of the mega event, Director General of J and K Police, K Rajendra Kumar was Chief Guest, who gave away the title trophies as also other individual prizes amidst cheers from a big crowd of cricket fans.
The event, wherein 16 teams contested for the top honours from within and outside the State, was jointly organised by the Kathua Police and Shaheed Welfare Committee Kathua.
Speaking to the gathering, the DGP said that J and K Police has been focussing on promoting sports activities in the State and the organisation has been providing logistic support to the talented youngsters to provide them opportunities to hone their skills in the field of sports.
He further said that police organisation besides its professional duties is promoting sports culture in the State and the motive behind this is to provide platform to the youth to achieve excellence in the field so that they could compete at national and international levels.
He said that the organisation has chalked out the sports calendar for the year 2016 and different tournaments of various sports events would be organised at different places across the State.
The DGP said that the activities have helped enthusing the youth of the State for greater participation in sports adding that the events have served as a bridge of understanding and good will between the people and police. Paying tributes to police martyrs, he said that sacrifices of these martyrs have made JKP proud and their sacrifices will not be forgotten.
Among the others, the closing ceremony was attended by DIG JKS Range, Ashkoor Ahmed Wani, SP Kathua, Neeva Jain, District Development Commissioner, Romesh Kumar, Principal PTS Kathua, Sanjeev Khajuria, CO CRPF 121 Bn, SS Rana, Additional SP Kathua, Nasir Ahmed, Chairman CTM Kathua, K.C Sharma, President District Industries Association, Ajit Bawa, prominent industrialists, prominent citizens, families of martyrs and large gathering of cricket lovers.
