10-year RI, Rs 2 lakh fine to Ganja smugglers

JAMMU: First Additional Sessions Judge Jammu M.A Chowdhary on Wednesday awarded 10 years Rigourous Imprisonment (RI) and fine of Rs 2 lakh to Nirmal Singh, son of Mohan Singh, resident of Village Nambal Mattan, Tehsil and District Anantnag and Virender Gupta, son of Sain Dass, resident of Lower Roop Nagar, Muthi Tehsil and District Jammu in NDPS case.
According to the police case, a Police Party from Police Station Bahu Fort Jammu, headed by ASI Mohammad Fareed on 13th October 2010 stopped a Truck (JK03-0291) loaded with apples coming from Narwal Bala driven by Nirmal Singh with an associate Virender Gupta at Panama Chowk and on search a multi-coloured bag was found kept behind the seat of driver containing about 5 Kg of cannabis (Ganja). Consequently, a case was registered vide FIR No. 240/2010 under Sections 8/20 of NDPS Act.
Justice Chowdhary after hearing Additional Public Prosecutor Ajay Singh Manhas for the State whereas Advocate Prince Khanna for the accused persons observed that illicit drugs have a high addiction potential and there is gradual increase in their intake, getting the users dependent on these drugs both physically and psychologically. The young generation, which is called future of a society or a nation, are thus at a peril. With these observations, court awarded 10 years RI and fine of Rs 2 lakh. In default of payment of fine, the defaulting convict shall undergo further simple imprisonment for a period of three years.
