Akhtar flags off mountaineering, trekking expeditions

SRINAGAR: Minister for Education, Naeem Akhtar on Sunday said various initiatives taken by the present government to promote extracurricular activities in schools have started bearing fruit, adding that such activities have gained new momentum and will encourage hands-on learning among students.

The minister said this while flagging off a team of around 100 boys to a trekking expedition to Mahadev. The expedition is jointly organised by Jammu and Kashmir Mountaineering and Hiking Club (JKMHC) and SP School. The minister was also accompanied by President, Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), Col Chauhan.

The minister also flagged off another expedition team from M P School to Mahadev trail, comprising of around 80 boys along with some members of JKMHC.

The minister said that all efforts are being made to encourage field visits, trekking, and other such activities in schools. He further said that as a part of this initiative mountaineering clubs have also been constituted in some schools and trekking trips have been organised.

Later, the minister along with president IMF, also flagged off a JKMHC group of seven participants to Harmukh .This group will attempt to scale 5145 mts high peak in Bandipora, which has not been climbed in last 25 years and will be the first attempt by the Club at the peak.

Pertinently, President IMF, Col. Chauhan is in Srinagar for promotion of adventure tourism in the Valley.
