LEH : Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, has reiterated that tourism remains one of the most important pillars of Ladakh’s economic growth, playing a crucial role in generating livelihoods for local communities while strengthening allied sectors such as hospitality, transport, handicrafts, and eco-tourism. He stressed that tourism development must go hand in hand with sustainable and responsible practices to safeguard Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem and ensure long-term, inclusive benefits for the region and its people.

The Lieutenant Governor made these remarks during his visit to the iconic Sangam Point, one of Ladakh’s most popular tourist attractions, located around 35 kilometres from Leh on the Srinagar–Leh National Highway. Sangam Point is famous for the dramatic confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers, where the clear blue waters of the Indus merge with the muddy green-brown waters of the Zanskar, creating a visually stunning natural spectacle admired by visitors from across the world.Describing Sangam Point as a natural marvel and a flagship destination for Ladakh tourism, Kavinder Gupta said that such unique locations significantly enhance Ladakh’s appeal among both domestic and international tourists. He noted that the breathtaking landscape, framed by rugged mountains and deep river valleys, offers unforgettable experiences and makes Ladakh a preferred destination for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure enthusiasts.The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that Sangam Point has emerged as an important hub for adventure tourism, offering activities such as river rafting, trekking, and sightseeing. It also serves as a major stopover for travellers on the Srinagar–Leh route, with its easy accessibility from Leh strengthening its role in Ladakh’s overall tourism circuit. He emphasised the need to develop dedicated viewpoints and cafeterias at the site to enhance visitor comfort, while also ensuring cleanliness and environmental sustainability so that the area’s pristine beauty is preserved for future generations.Kavinder Gupta stated that since Ladakh became a Union Territory, focused and accelerated development has taken place across key sectors, with tourism receiving special priority. The UT Administration is working towards the holistic development of all prominent and potential tourist destinations through improved infrastructure, better connectivity, and enhanced visitor facilities.
The Lieutenant Governor reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to developing world-class tourism infrastructure while maintaining ecological balance. He urged officials and stakeholders to promote responsible tourism that empowers local communities and preserves Ladakh’s environment. Interacting with tourists, he welcomed them to Ladakh, sought feedback, and appealed to people across the country to explore Ladakh’s natural beauty, reaffirming that the Union Territory is steadily moving towards becoming a globally recognised sustainable tourism destination.
