NEW DELHI: In an inspiring address at the National Space Day celebrations at Bharat Mandapam, Union Minister for Science & Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh said that an Indian astronaut will announce “Viksit Bharat 2047” from the Moon’s surface by 2040, sending a powerful message that India has arrived on the global space stage.

astronauts Group Captains Subhanshu Shukla, Prasanth B. Nair, Ajit Krishnan and Angad Pratap.

Blending science, poetry, realism, and promise, Dr. Singh highlighted how India’s space journey has evolved from symbolic missions to a transformative force for scientific progress, public welfare, and national growth.
“India’s space programme has always been about more than rockets – it is about empowering people and shaping the future,” he said.
Reflecting on the theme “Aryabhatta to Gaganyaan: Ancient Wisdom to Infinite Possibilities,” the Minister said India’s space achievements, deeply rooted in its ancient knowledge systems, are now supported by cutting-edge innovation and growing private sector participation.
He noted that the roadmap ahead includes launching over 100 satellites, with 70% being small satellites, combining government-led missions and private ventures. Upcoming ISRO milestones include the human-robot mission Vayumitra (2025), Gaganyaan human spaceflight (2027), Chandramitra (2028), Chandrayaan-4, a Venus mission, and the Bharat Antariksh Station by 2035.
Applauding ISRO’s efforts, Dr. Singh recognized four IAF astronauts training for Gaganyaan and presented awards to student innovators from Bharatiya Antariksh Hackathon-2025 and ISRO Robotics Challenge (IRoC-U 2025). The hackathon drew over 61,000 students, while IRoC focused on autonomous systems for Mars-like environments.
Dr. V. Narayanan, Chairman ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space, also briefed attendees on India’s Human Spaceflight Programme and emphasized the country’s expanding leadership in global space exploration.
Dr. Singh concluded that opening the space sector to private players has sparked a new wave of innovation, with space technologies now aiding disaster management, smart cities, and governance. “National Space Day is not just to celebrate the past but to shape the future,” he said.
