On May 26, 2014, a defining chapter in India’s political and developmental history was penned when Narendra Modi took oath as the 14th Prime Minister of India. With a historic and unprecedented mandate from the people, his elevation marked a new era of decisive leadership. Now, as Prime Minister Modi completes 11 years in office, India stands as a transformed nation – economically empowered, globally respected, digitally connected, and socially uplifted. These years have not only redefined India’s governance framework but also laid the foundation for achieving the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
From the very beginning of his tenure, PM Modi declared himself the Pradhan Sevak of the people, emphasizing a governance model rooted in inclusivity and service. His leadership mantra – Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas – has served as the guiding light for numerous reforms and initiatives aimed at holistic national development. The transformation under his leadership can be seen across every sphere – from the rise in India’s global standing to the upliftment of the poor, from the digital revolution to infrastructure expansion, and from empowering farmers to ensuring national security.
Perhaps the most remarkable testimony to PM Modi’s leadership is India’s rise as the fourth-largest economy in the world, surpassing Japan with a nominal GDP of approximately USD 4 trillion. This is a monumental leap from around USD 2.1 trillion in 2014 and reflects consistent development, prudent economic management, and forward-looking policies over the last 11 years.
Launched in 2014, the Make in India initiative played a crucial role in boosting manufacturing and foreign direct investment (FDI), which attracted over USD 667 billion between April 2014 and March 2024. Complementing this, the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) campaign, launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, pushed domestic manufacturing, with a ?20 lakh crore economic package targeting key sectors like defence, healthcare, infrastructure, and agriculture.
India’s infrastructure landscape has undergone a phenomenal transformation. The length of national highways expanded from 91,287 km in 2014 to over 1.46 lakh km by 2023. Construction of rural roads under PMGSY has crossed 3.74 lakh km. The aviation sector witnessed unprecedented growth, with operational airports increasing from 74 to 157. Railways too have seen modernization through the introduction of 136 Vande Bharat trains. This physical connectivity has significantly enhanced economic integration and mobility across the nation.
Digitally, India has seen a silent revolution. Launched in July 2015, the Digital India initiative connected rural areas with high-speed internet and spurred digital literacy. The success of UPI (Unified Payments Interface), which processed 16.58 billion transactions in October 2024 alone, reflects the digital maturity of the country. UPI is now operational in seven countries and is gaining international recognition, marking India as a global leader in digital payments. The JAM Trinity (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, Mobile) eliminated middlemen, ensured transparency in benefit transfers, and empowered millions.
Social welfare and poverty alleviation have been at the heart of Modi’s governance. Over 25 crore Indians have been lifted out of multidimensional poverty in the last 9 years – a feat recognized by international agencies and driven by schemes like PM Jan Dhan Yojana (over 51 crore bank accounts), Ujjwala Yojana (10 crore free LPG connections), and PM Awas Yojana (over 4.2 crore homes sanctioned). In a landmark decision in June 2024, Modi’s third-term government pledged an additional 3 crore houses, reaffirming its commitment to housing for all. Electrification of all villages and sanitation through the Swachh Bharat Mission transformed the quality of life for the poorest citizens. Sanitation coverage rose from 38% to 100% between 2014 and 2019, earning global praise from the WHO.
Healthcare saw a game-changing transformation with the launch of Ayushman Bharat, the world’s largest health assurance scheme, covering over 50 crore people. The COVID-19 pandemic tested the resilience of India’s healthcare and governance systems. Under Modi’s leadership, India distributed over 220 crore vaccine doses, led digital innovation in vaccine tracking, and supported other countries with vaccine supplies. The Lancet journal praised Ayushman Bharat for addressing deep-rooted discontent in healthcare and pushing India closer to universal health coverage.
Farmers have remained central to Modi’s policy framework. The PM-KISAN scheme, launched in 2019, has disbursed 17 installments, benefiting over 9.2 crore farmers with direct income support. Soil Health Cards, e-NAM for agricultural marketing, and the creation of the Jal Shakti Ministry underscored the focus on sustainable agriculture and water resource management. These initiatives not only improved yields but also empowered farmers with tools, information, and financial security.
India’s global standing has significantly risen under Modi’s foreign policy doctrine, rooted in assertiveness, strategic autonomy, and cultural diplomacy. Presiding over the G20 Summit in 2023, India emerged as the voice of the Global South. PM Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to address the US Congress twice, further cementing India’s status as a key global player. His outreach has included landmark visits to countries where Indian leaders hadn’t set foot for decades. As a result, Modi has received top civilian honours from more than a dozen nations, including the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia, France, and Egypt.
On the cultural and spiritual front, the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya stands as a monumental moment in modern India. It symbolizes the restoration of civilizational pride and a long-awaited cultural renaissance. PM Modi also played a pivotal role in establishing June 21st as the International Day of Yoga, supported by 177 nations at the United Nations – a testament to his soft-power diplomacy and global influence.
India’s scientific achievements have soared with historic space missions under Modi’s leadership. ISRO’s successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar landing and the launch of the Aditya-L1 mission to study the sun have placed India among elite space faring nations. These milestones have bolstered national pride and scientific ambition.
Environmental stewardship has been a priority for Modi since his early days as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, where he set up the country’s first Climate Change Department. At the global level, he has advocated for climate justice and spearheaded the formation of the International Solar Alliance. His efforts have been globally recognized, earning him the United Nations’ Champions of the Earth Award and the Global Energy and Environment Leadership Award.
Administrative reform and good governance are cornerstones of Modi’s model. Through initiatives like PRAGATI (Pro-Active Governance And Timely Implementation), pending infrastructure and welfare projects have been fast-tracked. Transparency, digital tracking, and accountability have redefined bureaucratic functioning. The GST rollout in 2017 created One Nation, One Tax, simplifying the tax structure and improving business compliance. India’s Ease of Doing Business ranking improved dramatically from 142 in 2014 to 63 in 2019.
PM Modi’s journey from a humble beginning in Gujarat to becoming the most powerful elected leader in the world’s largest democracy is inspiring.
In June 2024, Modi secured a third consecutive term as Prime Minister, reaffirming the public’s unwavering faith in his leadership. The 2024 elections saw high voter turnout and reinforced his agenda of development, security, and welfare. This third term promises to accelerate India’s rise as a technological, economic, and cultural superpower.
In recent times, the abrogation of Article 370, One Nation, One Election, the Waqf Amendment Bill, and, most recently, Operation Sindoor, have proven Prime Minister Modi’s ability and commitment to safeguarding our nation and leading it on the path of development with grit and valour.
Eleven years of Modi’s leadership are not merely a chronological milestone but a saga of transformation. His governance has provided political continuity, economic vitality, social empowerment, and international recognition. As India marches toward its centenary of independence in 2047, the foundations laid during these 11 years serve as the launchpad for a developed, confident, and resurgent India – a Viksit Bharat.
