AIIMS Jammu and National Institute of Biologicals Advance Hemovigilance Practices

JAMMU: The Department of Transfusion Medicine at AIIMS Jammu, in collaboration with the National Institute of Biologicals (NIB) Noida, hosted a two-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on August 9-10, 2024.
The CME, titled “Hemovigilance and its Clinical Relevance,” aimed to enhance awareness and expertise among healthcare professionals regarding transfusion-related risks and best practices in hemovigilance.
The event was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO of AIIMS Jammu, with the Guest of Honour, Lt. General Prof. (Dr.) Sunil Kant, Medical Superintendent and Dean (Research), and Dean Academics, Prof. (Dr.) Meeta Gupta. The CME drew 120 participants, including faculty from clinical departments, senior residents, nursing faculty, and senior nursing officers.
The program featured expert-led sessions and interactive discussions on advancements in hemovigilance, essential for ensuring the safety and efficacy of blood transfusions. Notable speakers included Prof. (Dr.) Gita Negi, Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine at AIIMS Rishikesh; Dr. Gopal Patidar, Additional Professor at AIIMS New Delhi; and Dr. Akanksha Bisht, Scientist Grade-I at NIB Noida and Head of the Hemovigilance Program of India (HvPI).
Speakers shared insights on emerging trends, regulatory updates, and practical strategies for improving hemovigilance systems. Topics included the Hemovigilance Program of India, adverse blood reaction monitoring, administration of blood components, and implementation of national and international standards.
Participants engaged in case-based discussions addressing practical challenges in hemovigilance, providing hands-on knowledge for managing and reporting transfusion-related adverse events.
The CME facilitated connections among professionals, fostering knowledge exchange and partnerships to advance transfusion safety. Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta praised the event, stating, “This CME underscores our commitment to advancing transfusion medicine and ensuring the highest standards of patient safety. Our collaboration with NIB Noida has been instrumental in bringing together leading experts and practitioners to share knowledge and drive improvements in hemovigilance.”
As part of ongoing best practices in transfusion medicine, AIIMS Jammu has introduced the role of a Hemovigilance Nurse, with Monika Rohilla trained for this position. The institution has also established a Hospital Transfusion Committee involving clinical blood user departments and policy-making administrators to enhance patient care.
Dr. Akanksha Bisht highlighted the importance of the collaboration, saying, “Our joint efforts with AIIMS Jammu underscore the critical role of ongoing education and shared expertise in enhancing hemovigilance practices. We are proud to contribute to this vital field and support the professional development of those involved in blood transfusion.”
The successful completion of this CME represents a significant advancement in transfusion medicine, reinforcing the commitment of AIIMS Jammu and NIB Noida to improving patient safety and the quality of blood transfusion services.
