After winning bronze in New Zealand fencing queen ‘Chhavi’ accorded warm reception

JAMMU: Hailing from a small village Jandial Thati, tehsil Bhalwal of district Jammu, fencing queen Chhavi Sharma, daughter of government servant Vijay Kumar Sharma, was accorded a warm reception at Jammu on her return from Newzealand after her wonderful show fetched her sabre team bronze in the ongoing 2024 Commonwealth Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship at Christchurch in Newzealand.
A good number of her well wishers including sportspersons and the officers and officials of the Department of Youth Services and Sports and J&K Sports Council accorded a warm reception to the champion at Jammu Airport on her return from Christchurch.
On the occasion, the Deputy Director Youth Services and Sports (Central), Jitender Mishra honoured Chhavi with a bouquet as a token of gratitude from the Department for her remarkable achievement.
“After her great show in the 67th National School Games last season, we were always hopeful that she was all set to bring laurels to J&K UT and the Nation at the higher levels. This achievement at a young age will serve her as a launching pad for a brilliant future. She has made all of us proud,” said Mishra.
Chhavi was all praise for J&K Sports Council and the Department of Youth Services and Sports, headed by Secretary Youth Services and Sports, Sarmad Hafeez for providing her all the requisite facilities to blossom at the International scene. She also lavished praise on Fencing Association and Federation for the support and especially praised her coach Ujjwal Gupta for honing her skill and building confidence.
Meanwhile, Secretary Youth Services and Sports, Sarmad Hafeez, Director Youth Services and Sports, Subash Chander Chibber and Secretary J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul in their congratulatory messages have lauded her efforts for this wonderful achievement.
” Chhavi has displayed extraordinary grit and guts at the 2024 Commonwealth Games’. Securing medals at that level is always an uphill task. Now, she is going to serve as an inspiration for budding fencers,” maintained Ujjwal.
It is pertinent to mention here that Chhavi, who recently passed out from class 12th from Army Public School, Akhnoor has the distinction of winning a galaxy of medals at the national scene.
It is learnt that this year Chhavi has also taken part in the other two mega Championships namely Asian Cadet Fencing Championship held at Manama, Bahrain and World Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship held at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
She has also the honour of winning Gold medal in the Team Event at 30th Junior National Fencing Championship held at Cuttack, Odisha and winning individual Bronze medal in 18th Cadet National Fencing Championship held at Mehsana, Gujarat last year, besides winning a silver medal in the Team Event at 67th National School Games of Fencing held at Jammu, J&K last year.
