Balvinder calls for stringent action on food safety violations at Lakhanpur
STATE TIMES NEWS
JAMMU: Renowned RTI and social activist Balvinder Singh has raised serious concerns about the widespread practice of selling foodstuffs in the open without proper covering, particularly by shopkeepers and vendors at Lakhanpur near Toll Post area. Singh, who frequently travels out of UT, has observed that many of these vendors are posing a significant health risk to the general public.
He specifically mentioned the popular local delicacy, Bhalla, and urged authorities to ensure it is sold under safe conditions.
“Open exposure of food allows for contamination from dust, pollutants, and harmful microorganisms, leading to foodborne illnesses,” Singh stated. “This negligence can result in severe health issues, including gastrointestinal infections, food poisoning, and other serious diseases. Vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk.”
Singh has called on the Food Safety Department to take stringent action against shopkeepers who disregard basic hygiene practices. He emphasized the need for strict enforcement of food safety regulations to protect public health.
“Shopkeepers should be mandated to cover food items adequately, use clean and hygienic storage methods, and maintain a sanitary selling environment. Regular inspections and penalties for non-compliance should be implemented to ensure adherence to these standards,” he added. Singh also expressed surprise at the inaction of the civil administration, noting that many officials pass through this area and should be aware of the issue.
Public awareness campaigns are crucial in educating both vendors and consumers about the importance of food safety and hygiene.
Singh believes that ensuring food is handled, stored, and sold under sanitary conditions is not only a legal requirement but also a moral obligation to safeguard community health.
In conclusion, Singh urged the Civil Administration of Kathua and the Food Safety Department to take immediate action against offending shopkeepers and vendors. “We must not allow them to play with the health of consumers,” he asserted.
By enforcing strict food safety measures, the authorities can help mitigate health risks and promote a safer food supply for all.
