J&K, Ladakh mountaineers among HP peak summitters

JAMMU: Two young mountaineers from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh were part of the team that successfully scaled the tough peak in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh.
Women member, Urwah Mohammad Jawaid from Kashmir and Tashi Sangdup of UT of Ladakh were picked by the selection penal for the important expedition to Reo Pargil-II/Leo Purgyil (6792m/22284ft). Out of a team of 15, including eight students, finally three summited on June 17 at 8.53 am. Among three was young Tashi Sangdup (Chemical UG3)
of Ladakh, Abiral Tamang (Physics Faculty) and Anaranya Das ( Mechanical UG3) beside three High Altitude (HA) assistants. The expedition was organised by Jadavapur University Mountaineering and Hiking Club (JUMHC) Kolkata (West Bengal) under the leadership of Gautam Datta. Other team members were Urwah Mohammad Jawaid, Aryan Singh, Deborshi Sinha, Aman Mahato, Abhay Ranjan Bara and Rohan Biswas.
“So, in total, we were 15 people, which involved eight students of the college, one Professor (Physics faculty, I. E. Abiral Tamang) , our leader Gautam Dutta, who is a veteran in these kind of alpine style expeditions, four High Altitude Porters (HAPs) and one cook. Finally, three members of our club along with three HAPs went to the summit,” informed Krishna Mittal, secretary, JUMHC. This was an alpine style expedition that means it was independently organized by the Club and submitted without the help of any Sherpa.
“The necessary guidance provided by the leader, Gautam Dutta, who has proved his fitness at an age of 65. He has been a part of Everest expedition two times during the 90s and has submitted countless peaks. We look forward to more such expeditions in the coming years,” added the secretary JUMHC. Important to mention here that the Reo Pargil-II/Leo Purgyil summit was the highest achievement by JUMHC yet, the highest peak summitted by JUMHC since its establishment in 1966. “The achievement will surely boost the upcoming batches to get more indulges in these activities along with the academics in college,” said Krishna Mittal.
Earlier, the expedition team left Kolkata in the evening of June five via train to Chandigarh for on road onward journey to the expedition site.
