Unemployment is a serious issue. There are many factors which are responsible for this. Some of these include lack of proper education, lack of good skills and talents, inability to perform, lack of good job opportunities and rapidly growing population. Ahead is a look at the unemployment stability in the country, the consequences of unemployment and the measures taken by the government to control it. The Ministry of Labour and Employment in India maintains the records of unemployment in the country. Unemployment figures are calculated on the basis of the number of people who had no work for a substantial period of time during the 365 days preceding the date of reconciliation of figures and are still seeking employment. Unemployment causes serious socio-economic issues. This affects not only an individual but the whole society. Some of the major consequences of unemployment are explained below: Along with reducing the problem of unemployment, the Government of India has started many programs to help the unemployed in the country. Some of these include Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP), Jawahar Rojgar Yojana, Drought Prone Area Program (DPAP), Training for Self-Employment, Nehru Rojgar Yojana (NRY), Employment Assurance Scheme, Prime Minister’s Integrated Urban Poverty Alleviation Program (PMIUPEP), employment exchanges, employment in foreign countries, development of small and cottage industries, employment guarantee scheme and Jawahar Gram Samriddhi Yojana etc. Apart from providing employment opportunities through these programmes, the government is also sensitizing the importance of education and providing skill training to the unemployed. Unemployment is the root cause of various problems in the society.
