Jammu Mayor leads awareness campaign to save Surya Putri Tawi

JAMMU: As the auspicious Navratras reached towards their conclusion, Jammu Mayor Rajinder Sharma showing a sense of responsibility, sensitized the people to save water bodies of the region, especially the Tawi river.
He led the awareness campaign aimed at saving Surya Putri Tawi river and guided the people not to dump Saakh and plastic waste in Tawi.
Jammu Mayor along with volunteers reached Tawi spot, where people intended to immerse these Saakhs and asked them to avoid immersion of Saakh in Tawi water which is being used for drinking purpose and instead these be immersed in Canal water which is equally good.
While interacting with people visiting River tawi, Mayer said that there had been a tradition earlier to immerse Saakhs in Tawi river which had to be changed keeping in view the scarcity of drinking water all over. He told them that for the last many days we are requesting Jammuites not to immerse Saakh in River Tawi and visit Ranbir canal for the Same. While concluding his words he said, “No one can change society till people don’t change themselves.”
He said Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) in collaboration with NSS volunteers of various colleges and Jammu University also organized an awareness campaign against immersion of holy Saakh in Tawi river from yesterday.
Holding placards in their hands, he said, a number of NSS volunteers were seen standing on the Tawi bridge near Bikram Chowk and spreading message to keep the Tawi river pollution free.
On the request of Mayor, some people expressing their ignorance about such ban and their advertisements agreed to ensure holy Tawi river pollution free and moved towards Ranbir Canal for immersion of Saakh.
