It is heartening to note that the BJP-led NDA Government has brought in an amendment giving autonomy to the Lokpal search committee, which is to shortlist and recommend names independently for the selection of members of the Lokpal. However, as pointed out by Justice K.T. Thomas, as long as the provision that the selection committee can “consider any person other than the persons recommended by the search committee” remains, it will only mean that the NDA government does not want to let go its stranglehold on the selection process, thereby creating the impression that it is not only any different from the UPA.
