JAMMU: The Law School, University of Jammu under the supervision of Dr Bindu Sangra organised a debate competition for the students of The Law School.
The topic for the debate competition was Contempt of Court is Necessary for Maintaining the Majesty of Law.
A total of 12 students participated in the debate competition of which some spoke for the motion and others against the motion.
Students speaking for the motion highlighted the importance of contempt power of the Courts to maintain the dignity of the Courts and the Majesty of Law.
Those speaking against the motion were of the opinion that though Indian Judiciary has credibility and reputation in the eyes of the people but the power of contempt must not be used arbitrarily by the judges in order to uphold their own dignity. Those going against the motion also said that the law relating to contempt of Court is somewhat uncertain and undefined and instead of maintaining majesty of law, this law is being used by the judges to maintain their own dignity. They also said that People in a democratic country must be given access and opportunity to examine the functioning of Court so that their faith remains intact in Judiciary. Students also referred to many case laws in which the contempt of power was used by the Judges to uphold their own dignity.
Those among the jury members included B.L Saraf, former District and Sessions Judge and Prof Sanjay Gupta, Director of The Law School.
In the competition, Zirgham Hamid of 9th semester was adjudged as first Swati Charak and Rabiya Gulzar Qureshi both were adjudged as second and Rahul Agarwal was adjudged as third. Consolation prizes were also given to the other participants.
The proceedings were carried by Urvashi of 5th Semester and all the faculty members attended the function.
