Cong gets 8.50 lakh membership in J&K: AICC

JAMMU: The Congress today said that nearly 8.5 lakh residents of Jammu and Kashmir have filled the primary membership forms from all the three regions of the state.
“The membership drive, which concluded across the country on 15 May, got a very good response in Jammu and Kashmir as about 8.50 lakh residents filled the primary membership forms in the three regions of the state,” AICC appointed Assistant Pradesh Returning Officer (APRO) Deepak Rathore told reporters here.
He said after the completion of the membership drive, the party is concentrating on the booth level, block level and district congress committee elections which will be followed by elections to state level polls.
“We are hopeful of completing the process of state Congress elections by October 25,” he said.
Rathore said the AICC has given them the responsibility of overseeing the membership drive and election process in the state.
“A total of 22 District Returning officers have been appointed to monitor the elections at district level in the state. While most of them have already arrived here, some more are reaching in the next couple of days,” he said.
Sharma said there are 360 blocks in the state and in the first phase, booth level elections will be completed by August 20.
Two members each from the booth level will be elected to the blocks to complete the process from 21 August to 4 September, he said adding the district congress committee elections will take place from 5 September to 15 September.
