cowNew Delhi: To conserve and develop indigenous bovine breeds, government has launched ‘Rashtriya Gokul Mission’ under the National Programme for Bovine Breeding and Dairy Development (NPBBD).

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh told Lok Sabha today that the NPBBD was launched earlier this year with an integrated, holistic and scientific approach to improve and upgrade the genetic makeup of bovines.

Other objectives include enhancing their production and productivity, including developing and conserving indigenous breeds of milch cattle and development of dairy infrastructure for improved procurement, processing and marketing, he said during Question Hour.

Singh said the scheme has two components — National Programme for Bovine Breeding and National Programme for Dairy Development.

“To conserve and develop indigenous bovine breeds and to increase their productivity, the government has provided a further focus on indigenous bovine breeds by way for a new initiative ‘Rashtriya Gokul Mission’,” he said.

To another question, the Minister said the government is implementing Central Sector National Scheme of Welfare of Fishermen for both inland and marine sector under which assistance is provided for development of model fishermen village, group accident personal insurance, saving-cum-relief and training extension.
