JAMMU: Earth Hour 2017 was celebrated across the State with a large number of citizens and institutions becoming partner for this energy conservation campaign. This day is celebrated around the world to renew the pledge by every section of the society towards energy conservation.
Earth Hour is a global initiative of World Wide Fund (WWF) for nature and the world’s largest grass root movement for the protection of environment. This year’s Earth Hour saw participation from the top leadership of the State as well as from all the sections of the society.
At Jammu, Raj Bhawan Jammu observed the Earth Hour on Saturday evening by switching off all non-essential lights at 8:30 PM, for one hour.
Governor, N.N Vohra issued a special message wherein he led this campaign by putting off all the non-essential lights at Raj Bhavan Jammu during Earth Hour. He also called upon all commercial, social, governmental establishments, educational institutions and the people across Jammu and Kashmir to observe Earth Hour.
Citizens around the world are uniting to observe Earth Hour to enlarge awareness about the arising serious consequences of climate change and persuade people all over the globe to save energy by switching off non-essential lights even though, symbolically, only for one hour.
In her message, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti expressed her happiness over Government of Jammu and Kashmir joining hands with WWF for spreading awareness about energy conservation.
On this occasion, the Chief Minister called upon the people of the State to take a pledge to save environment which calls for redoubling our efforts to save planet earth from the emerging threat of climate change.
Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Nirmal Singh said that every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir should join this movement for energy conservation and feel proud of their individual efforts for nature conservation.
In Leh, Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor of LAHDC, Leh, Dr Sonam Dawa Lonpo and in Kargil, the Chairman LAHDC, Kargil led the common masses for observing Earth Hour.
Prestigious educational institutions of the State specially the University of Kashmir and Central University of Jammu were also part of this energy saving movement in Kashmir and in Jammu respectively.
On this occasion University of Kashmir took a practical action also by
putting thousands of LED bulbs in their campus.
Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, Director, Department of Information and Public Relations and Dr. Pankaj Chandan, WWF-India’s Head in the State of Jammu and Kashmir expressed their satisfaction over the success of this awareness raising campaign.
