Farooq, Nazir among 9 in fray for Srinagar Parliamentary seat;Seven in fray for Anantnag Lok Sabha bypoll

SRINAGAR: According to the Returning Officer, Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency, all the nine candidates whose nomination papers were found valid as per provisions of the People Representation Act 1951 are contesting the forthcoming by-elections for the Srinagar Parliamentary seat which is going to polls April 9, 2017.
The candidate in the fray are Farooq Abdullah of J&K National Conference, Nazir Ahmad Khan of J&K Peoples Democratic Party, Bikram Singh of J&K Liberal Democratic Party, Chetan Sharma of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, Sajad Reshi of Rashtriya Samajwadi Party (S), and independent candidates Sajjad Hussain Beigh, Ghulam Hassan Dar, Farooq Ahmad Dar and Mehraj Khurshid Malik.
Meanwhile, Seven candidates were in the fray for Anantnag Lok Sabha bypoll as the deadline for filing nominations ended on Friday. On the last date of filing of nominations to -Anantnag Parliamentary Constituency, two more nominations by Mohammad Yaseen Poswal and Sajjad Ahmed Dar, both Independent candidates were filed today in the office of the concerned Returning Officer. Thus a total of seven candidates have filed their nominations for the Anantnag Parliamentary constituency. These include Tasaduq Hussain Mufti of J&K People’s Democratic Party, Ghulam Ahmad Mir as a joint candidate of Indian National Congress and National Conference, Sanjay Kumar Dhar of Rashtriya Samajwadi Party (S), Ghulam Mohammad Wani of All J&K Kissan Mazdoor Party and Rakesh Koul as an Independent candidate besides the two candidates mentioned above.
The main contest is expected between ruling PDP candidate Mufti Tassaduq Hussain and state Congress chief G A Mir. “We have received seven nomination papers during the prescribed time limit,” an election official said. The bypoll was necessitated for Anantnag Lok Sabha seat after Hussain’s sister Mehbooba Mufti resigned from the Parliament to become the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir last year. Scrutiny of the nominations will be held on March 27 and the last date of withdrawal of nominations is March 29 for Anantnag seat where polling will be held April 12, the official said.
