AYUSH drugs manufacturers rue defaming of Ayurveda

JAMMU: Federation of AYUSH Drugs Manufacturers charged State Government for creating confusion among the masses about the quality of AYUSH medicines and presence of huge quantity of heavy metals in Ayurvedic and Unani formulations.
President Federation of AYUSH Drugs Manufacturers, Dr Virender Mahajan stated that processed heavy metals and minerals are the back-bone of the AYUSH drug industry as majority of the lifesaving medicines mentioned in Ayurvedic/Unani texts contain heavy metals as ingredients and all these medicines have legal sanction under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
Mahajan said that State Administration is least bothered about the quality and standard of Ayurvedic/Unani medicines. He demanded foolproof mechanism in selection as well as verification of medicines. Alleging that backdated document was uploaded after the opening of the E-Tender invited by J&K Medical Supplies Corporation Limited (JKMSCL) on 18th January 2017, Mahajan sought a thorough probe to reveal the intention behind this act and book the culprits.
Stating that under the provision of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, Pharmacopeial Laboratory for Indian Medicine is the only designated Laboratory under Rule 163 of Drugs and Cosmetics Act and it is mandatory for regulatory agencies to send legal samples to designated laboratory, he demanded that State Government should come out with a White Paper explaining how the legal samples were sent to private laboratories without following the procedures as defined in Drugs and Cosmetic Act. “Federation of AYUSH Drugs Manufacturers will also take up the matter with Ministry of AYUSH for black listing of IIIM Laboratory as the management of IIIM does not know about the regulatory norms for AYUSH Medicines,” he added.
