‘Safai Karamcharis likely to resume work today’

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir Government on Friday fizzled out the ongoing strike of Safai Karamcharis of Jammu Municipal Corporation at a meeting here this evening.
According to well placed sources, the government representatives have asked employees especially the supervisiors to join their work from tomorrow or else face disciplinary action.
“The supervsiors, who are regular employees, have been directed to resume their duties from tomorrow otherwise they may land into trouble,” sources said.
They said that the government has also said that those who are on contract, if not join, can be replaced with fresh recruits.
Hundreds of sweepers who were on indefinite strike pressing the government to consider their demands would resume work from tomorrow.
The strike of sweepers under the banner of Civic Safai Karamchari Union, Jammu Municipal Corporation, entered the third consecutive day. They are demanding scrapping of NGO system, re-organisation of JMC, extend wards 23 to 71, enhancement of wages of about 800 casual based Safai Karamcharis and regularisation of the services of the drivers.
The employees this evening had a detailed meeting with the administrative officials including Divisional Commissioner Jammu Dr Pawan Kotwal, Deputy Commissioner Jammu Simrandeep Singh, DIG Jammu Ashkoor Wani and JMC Commissioner Manmohan Singh.
“Representatives of Union this evening had a meeting with officials and they have agreed to resume their work from tomorrow,” an official here said.
He said that they had already put forth their demands before the Chief Secretary and they are under consideration.
“We will also be holding a review meeting with the leaders of the Union here tomorrow and in case they remain adamant, action can also be initiated against them,” he added.
Meanwhile, sources in the Corporation said that the government has also launched crackdown on Union leaders for provoking the employees not joining their duties.
Earlier in the morning a demonstration was held at Town Hall Complex Jammu Municipal Corporation.
President Civic Safaikaramchari Union, Rinku Gill said that number of times the members have met with concerned authorities and submitted genuine demands but no positive action has been taken so far.
“We are on ‘Kaam Choro Hartal’ and with ongoing strike, if any epidemic spreads due to health and sanitation issues in Jammu City, the JMC authorities shall be responsible for that,” said Gill.
The winter capital is stinking for the past three days due to heaps of garbage in view of sweepers’ agitation.
