JAMMU: Activists of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Friday, amid slogans, ‘gheraoed’ the vehicle of a BJP Minister and showed black flags at University of Jammu here.
The ABVP activists intercepted the official cavalcade of Minister of State Tourism, Education and Culture Priya Sethi for sharing dais with the Jammu University Vice Chancellor Prof R D Sharma, who allegedly sparked controversy recently for his remarks on Burhan Wani.
Sharma had said that Burhan Wani should not have been killed but arrested and it could have prevented Kashmir unrest.
Meanwhile, shouting slogans, the protesting ABVP leaders attempted to stop an official vehicle of the Minister, who had visited the Campus to attend ongoing three-day Science Congress inaugurated yesterday by the Governor N N Vohra.
“We did not want our Minister to share dais with a person having ‘anti-national’ mindset,” Varsha Jandial, ABVP leader here said.
She said that the ABVP leaders had also approached the Minister requesting her not to attend the programme but she did. “Despite our request Sethi attended the programme and we were left with no other option other than to ‘gherao’ her,” she said.
Varsha alleged that the Jammu University Vice Chancellor allowed other activities in the campus but have barred student bodies to conduct any activity, adding, “He has no right to be in chair for delivering ‘anti-national’ remarks and advocating for Burhan Wani’s arrest rather than his elimination.”
However, police acted swiftly and prevented the demonstrating ABVP activists to disrupt movement of the Minister’s convoy. Around six of the protesting activists were also detained by the police.
