Jammu-Srinagar highway closed for second day

Jammu: The Jammu-Srinagar national highway continued to remain closed for vehicular traffic for the second consecutive day on Saturday following snowfall at various places in Ramban and Udhampur districts, while thousands of passengers are stuck in Jammu with most of them camping in bus stand only.
“The 300-km long highway continues to remain closed for vehicular traffic since 7 AM on Friday following  snowfall and heavy rains at various places en route the highway,” a Traffic Police officer said. No vehicle was allowed to move on the highway towards Kashmir Valley from Nagrota check post as a precautionary measure, he said.
There has been heavy snowfall at Jawahar Tunnel, Banihal and Patnitop areas along the highway. Hills of Bhaderwah, Kathua, Kishtwar and Ramban also experienced snowfall on Friday. In Jammu city and plain area, heavy rainfall is on triggering cold wave conditions.
A medium danger avalanche warning has been issued for some avalanche prone districts of Jammu and Kashmir by Chandigarh-based Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) valid for the next 24 hours starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The advisory covers areas in Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Kishtwar, Rajouri, Doda, Poonch and Reasi districts.
Banihal Top in Jammu and Kashmir had received 26 cm of snow while Gulmarg got 82 cm and Drass 8 cm.
