JAMMU: The BJP-PDP alliance government has now decided to crush the ongoing agitation by outstation NIT Srinagar students, at least in Jammu.
For the past couple of days, these students have been organising peaceful protests in Jammu with active support from members of the various student bodies.
Students from degree colleges of Jammu were also boycotting their classes and coming in support of the NIT students to raise their voice against the unjustified behaviour of the NIT authorities and the State Government besides the Centre.
On Wednesday, Deputy Inspector General of Police Jammu Range, SSP Jammu and other senior police officers attended a meeting with the management and wardens of different degree colleges and other educational institutions where clear instructions were passed to them not to entertain NIT students on their campuses.
Directions were also issued to the college authorities to check student bodies from forcing boycott of the classes and taking out protest rallies along with NIT students camping in Jammu.
The college authorities were also told to identify the ‘nuisance makers’ and monitor their suspicious activities aimed at provoking a situation where police action was warranted to contain an explosive situation.
It is also learnt through official sources who attended the meeting with the senior police officers that the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti had taken serious note of the adverse media publicity and is keen on restoring order in the educational institutions at the earliest.
“Chief Minister will not tolerate any act of indiscipline on the campus and is determined to restore order at the earliest as the NIT Srinagar had snowballed in to a major controversy soon after she took charge of the office of Chief Minister”, police officers are learnt to have briefed the college authorities to drive home the seriousness attached with the emotive issue.
In addition to maintaining strict vigil on the campuses, the college authorities were also briefed about certain precautions needed and steps to be taken to prevent similar situations from taking ugly turn in the coming months especially during sporting events and broadcast of matches.
The issue of drug menace and general law and order and other problems also came up for discussion during the meeting where senior police authorities assured the college authorities to remain alert and help the state police to effectively deal with the situation.
