Callous CBSE
Dear Editor
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I wish to bring to fore the callous attitude of authorities for ignoring the basic concern of students with regards to time management and the repercussions as such creating nervousness and confusions among the young minds.
On April 3, 2016, my younger brother took JEE-MAIN examination in “SOS Herman Gmeiner School” in Jammu. As it was clearly mentioned on the admit cards, my brother did not take his watch to the examination hall. To quote the instructions in the admit card:
So, it was expected that the students will get a wall clock in the hall. However, in spite of this clear rule, the school did not have any wall clock in the room. Before the exam started, my brother inquired about the same thing from the invigilator, and he was told that if students need to
know the time, they should ask the invigilator.
I am highly disappointed by such a dismal state of affairs at this school. I strongly want to emphasize here that unlike board examinations, exams like JEE-MAIN and Advanced heavily require a student to manage time very efficiently. From my personal experience when I cleared IIT-JEE in 2012, I know how important it is to keep track of time in such exams. To excel in these, time management is almost as important as having the skills to solve the problems. Every problem in the booklet has to be solved in at most 2 minutes. Given the fact that these problems are non-trivial, I think it is quite clear that not having access to a watch at all times is quite detrimental to a student’s performance, even if the student is academically brilliant.
This reckless attitude shows how casually such matters are taken in some CBSE schools. I am sure that CBSE would have played its part by informing the school about installing a clock in every room. But it did not happen. Though it might sound a trivial issue to a person who is unaware of what a student experiences while taking JEE, but I again want to emphasize that it is a very important concern for the student.
I would really appreciate if this matter is not ignored by CBSE.
