JAMMU: A final year student of the Indira Gandhi Government Dental College, Jammu was suspended by the college authorities following complaints by the students that he reportedly burnt down Tricolour after thrashing some of the students minutes after India was defeated in the T-20 World Cup semifinal match in Mumbai late Thursday night.
An FIR under Sections 506, 323, 2/3 CrPC has been registered against him.
The accused a BDS student, identified as Inzamam-ul-Haq Khan of 2010 batch managed to flee. His class-mates told STATE TIMES that Inzamam-ul-Haq’s batch has passed out from the college. However, his involvement in anti-student activities and indiscipline has cost him one year.
Several other students told STATE TIMES that Inzamam is ‘nephew’ of former Congress Minister Shabir Khan, who had to quit the ministry for alleged molestation of a medico.
According to College authorities, the trouble on the campus started around 11.00 PM on Thursday night after faculty members and students dispersed after having their dinner. The students had pooled money to enjoy the evening alongside watching cricket match on the big screen inside the auditorium. Initially the college Principal was reluctant to grant permission, fearing unrest in the campus but when some of the staff members were cajoled to join the evening the students were given go ahead to organise the special screening of the match.
According to eyewitness reports, the final year student who is also a close relative of former Congress minister, allegedly grabbed Tricolour from one of the girl student and reportedly burnt it down minutes after the students and staff members dispersed after the match was over.
Initially college authorities resisted students’ pressure to suspend the nuisance maker but when local leaders also intervened and staged protest demonstrations the Principal submitted a written complaint to the nearby police station seeking action against Inzamam.
“We got reports that a student at the Dental College, Jammu, allegedly set the tricolor on fire after India lost the semifinal match against West Indies in the T20 World Cup tournament last evening,” SSP Jammu Sunil Gupta said.
He said a case has been registered against the accused and investigations started to ascertain the truth.
“The concerned Station House Officer (SHO), Dy SP and SP have been instructed to probe the allegations,” he said.
Meanwhile, various student organisations held a protest and demanded action against the accused for the incident.
Police sources told STATE TIMES that during the course of preliminary investigations some students of IG Dental College had gone to Mohali to watch India-Pakistan match sometime back. These students donned Pakistani T-shirts, hooted Indian players, clapped their Pakistani counter parts and later posted their ‘joyous’ photographs on social media. Police is reported to have accessed to all this material, which they feel had been inspiring factor for some of the students including Inzamam to rejoice victory of West indies just to belittle India.
