JAMMU: Daily rated and casual workers of Power Development Department (PDD) were cane-charged by police when they took out protest rally against the Government near Canal Head here on Wednesday.
A large number of daily wagers assembled in the Office of Chief Engineer at Bagwati Nagar in the morning and started protest.
They raised loud slogans against the government and also in support of their pending demands.
They were demanding regularisation and framing a definite policy for it. The agitating workers were also demanded release of their pending wages and enhancement in their daily wage rate.
The protesting daily wagers then took out a protest march towards the civil secretariat.
As they reached Canal Head, a strong contingent of State Police stopped them. The protesting workers tried to break the police cordon who were cane charged by the police.
Protesting leaders, while addressing workers, alleged that government has failed to honour its commitment. They said the workers have not been paid their wages since long. They claimed that the workers would now further intensify their strike.

They appealed to the PDD to furnish the record to the NIC Department as early as possible and State Govt to redress casual/need based workers’ demands in the coming budget session.
Meanwhile, their Kaam Chhoro Hartal entered the 129th consecutive day here on Wednesday.
Akhil Sharma, State President is leading the protest along with Provincial President Shesh Sharma, Vice President Sham Sharma, General Secretary Sanjeev and Secretary Sawar Khan.
