Integrated farming system makes farming profitable: VC SKUAST

JAMMU: SKUAST-Jammu in collaboration with ICAR-Indian Institute of Farming System Research, Modipuram organised three-day IV (XXXII of project) biennial workshop of AICRP -Integrated Farming System from 20th to 23rd December, 2016 at Chatha campus.
More than 140 scientists from 23 states and two union territories covering all the agro-climatic regions of the country and renowned dignitaries from ICAR and other august bodies attended the workshop.
Vice Chancellor SKUAST-J, Prof. P.K Sharma was the Chief Guest who informed that ICAR-Indian Institute of Farming System Research, Modipuram is taking a lead role in promoting research in the field of Integrated Farming System consorsium mode. He made it clear that the farmer particularly small and marginal farmers of the country are facing lot of problems with regard to productivity and profitability under changing climatic condition and declining in land holdings. The need of the hour is to double the income of the farmer and mitigate the ill effects of climate change and for that matter adoption of Integrated farming system approach is the only answer which will make our farming profitable, thereby provide livelihood security to small and marginal farmers, he added.
Dr. S Baskar, Assistant Director General (AAFCC) ICAR, who was the Guest of Honour, informed that Central Government is concentrating on various schemes for doubling of farmers income through soil health, more from less resources (input use efficiency), water management, Agro forestry, national Gokul Mission.
Dr. A.S Panwar, Director, ICAR-IIFSR, Modipuram who presided over the function shared that the institute is operating a two plan schemes AICRP on IFS with 25 main centres, 12 Sub centre, 32 On-farm Research centre, six voluntary centre and 20 centres with network project on organic farming spread across the country.
Dr. Jag Paul Sharma, Director Research expressed hope that these four days deliberations will go in a long way to bring some valuable futuristic research needs and also will help to boost its adoption strategies at farmers level.
About twenty one publications written by various scientists from different centres of this group across the country were released during the programme.
