Protecting rights, dignity of women cornerstones of progressive society: Nayeema

JAMMU: Treating women with dignity and protecting their rights are the cornerstones of a progressive society. This was stated by Nayeema Mehjoor, Chairperson J&K State Women Commission while speaking to a batch of university and college teachers who are presently attending a UGC sponsored Refresher Course in Human Rights being organised by the Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC), University of Jammu in collaboration with the Department of Law.
Highlighting the initiatives launched by the women commission, like the recent awareness programmes in Doda and Samba Region, that would generate awareness among the populace with regard to women’s rights and issues, Nayeema reiterated that government’s resolve to provide a meaningful and dignified life to the womenfolk of the State.
“I have had a series of meeting with the Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti on various issues confronting women in the State and we are in the process of making the Women Commission Centers at the district level more vibrant and responsive,” she added.
Terming the teachers and educationists as the agents of change, the Chairperson appreciated the role being played by the teaching community in bringing a positive change in the society especially with regard to women’s issues. She called upon the teachers to value and preserve rich social and traditional ethos of the society.
Nayeema, who had the honour of being an acclaimed BBC Journalist for 22 years, working in London, during the course of her lecture also drew comparisons between the western and eastern societies and reasoned out as to why it is important for us to strengthen the institutions of home, family and community in India – lest it leads to break up of social fabric like the western culture.
Earlier the Guest speaker was welcomed by Prof Naresh Padha, Director HRDC Jammu University and Prof Arvind Jasrotia, HoD Law Department and Course Coordinator. The Guest Speaker was introduced by Ranjeet Kalra, Teaching Faculty at HRDC, JU.
