LEH: The day long Martyrs Archery tournament concluded on Monday with Ladakh Scouts Red team lifting the Trophy. The archery tournament sponsored by Oppo Mobile was organised by Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) Youth Wing.
The tournament was held in the honour of martyrs venerable Lobzang Tsondus of Likir Monastery and Tashi Angchuk Saspol laid down their precious lives on 24th January’ 1981 during the agitation while demanding Schedule Tribe status for Ladakh region and in memory of Tsewang Dorjey Saboo, Nawang Rinchen Sankar and Tsering Stobdan Durbok who attained martyrdom on 27th August’ 1989 during Ladakh’s agitation for the demand of Union Territory status for the Ladakh region.
Family members of the martyrs were Chief Guests on the occasion while Councillors Venerable Lobzang Nyantak, Sayeeda Ladakhi, Rinchen Lhamo, Advocate Mohammad Nazir and Ven. Sonam Chhosphel were Guests of Honour.
Among other dignitaries, Anjuman Imamiya President Asharf Ali Barcha, Anjuman Moin Ul Islam Vice President Dr.Noor and District Youth Services and Sport officer were also present. Nominated Councillors Rinchen Lhamo and Sayeeda Ladakhi announced Rs 1 lakh each from their constituency development funds while Advocate Nazir announced Rs.50,000 for the event. LBA President Tsewang Thinles said archery tournament was aimed at remembering the martyrs whose contributions to Ladakh’s development cannot be forgotten for years to come.
LBA Youth Wing President Rinchen Namgyal said that apart from remembering martyrs, LBA is intending to promote traditional sports amongst youth and income generated from the tournament will be used in Riglam school where economically underprivileged are given education. Sonam Gonbo, a family member of a martyred, said that families have not yet got promised pieces lands from LAHDC/Government despite assurances in the last two decades. LBA promised to donate half kanal of land each to the martyrs’ families.
The winner of the tournament was awarded with cash prize of Rs.11,000 and cash prize of Rs.7000 to Sabu Phu Red, the first runner and Rs. 5,000 to the second runner which was Fight to Win Thiksay.
Tsering Namgyal of Saboo Phu Red with 56 points the Highest Individual scorer and was awarded an Oppo worth Rs. 18,500 while highest Target hitter Tsering Motup of Saser Kangri team fetched cash prize of Rs. 5,000.
