Mother tongue first

0 98

Dear Editor,
Perhaps this is the reason that schools claiming to be English medium have sprung up not only in cities, but also in villages. But where is quality? Barring a few, students coming out of these ‘Oxfords’ neither have proper knowledge of English nor of their mother tongue, which they ignore at the cost of English. The position of social sciences in English medium is even more pathetic as cramming is the rule for passing an examination. Extraordinary stress on a language other than mother tongue definitely results in stunting the intellectual growth of a child. It is not surprising that in a country of 1.25 billion we do not have any original research worth the name. We should review our education policy and give due place to mother tongue, at least in primary education.
