NEW DELHI: Former Union Minister and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad has served a a notice for discussing Kashmir unrest in Rajya Sabha.
The previous session of Parliament was rocked with the issue of Kashmir unrest. Under pressure exerted by Opposition, the government was forced to review the use of pellet guns in the Valley. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh formed a committee to find suitable replacements. In the unrest which broke in Kashmir, nearly 100 civilians have been killed and more than 100 have been left blinded by at least one eye. Human rights’ watchdogs have demanded the government of India to exercise maximum restraint while dealing with protesters in the Valley.
Over the past 127 days, schools, colleges and many other institutions in the Valley have been brought to a standstill.
Although curfew was lifted in September, civil curfew continues to remain at many places. While the sentiment in Kashmir was rapidly turning anti-India, Centre decided to use track-II diplomacy. The all-party delegation was formed to hold talks with all the stakeholders. However, Hurriyat refused the proposal to indulge in talks, and turned away members of Indian parliament who reached their doorsteps under personal capacity.
