Jitendra receives Myanmar President

NEW DELHI: Myanmar Pre-sident U. Htin Kyaw, accompanied by his wife and a high level delegation, arrived here this afternoon on a three-day visit to India. He was received at the airport by Union Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) with Independent Charge (I/C) of Northeast, Dr Jitendra Singh, who has been nominated by the Government of India as the Minister Accompanying/In-waiting during the visit by the Myanmar Head of State. President H. Kyaw’s visit assumes special significance in view of the Modi Government’s impetus on “Act East” policy and India’s increasing strategic as well as trade engagement with countries on the eastern borders. The visit follows close on the heels of high level engagement with Myan-mar Government by Minister for External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj. Soon after his arrival, Myanmar President and the first lady were taken to Hotel Taj Palace where arrangements have been made for the stay of the visiting dignitaries. The official engagements of the President and the accompanying delegation will begin from tomorrow. Giving a brief resume of the Myanmar President’s itinerary in the union capital, Dr Jitendra Singh said, the distinguished guests will attend the Forecourt Ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan tomorrow morning followed by a ceremonial reception, after which the President will visit Rajghat to pay respects to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host a lunch in the honour of Myanmar President at Hyder-abad House tomorrow while the evening banquet will be hosted by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Pres-ident Htin Kyaw will leave New Delhi for Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday afternoon.
